Hair Is the Truth When It Comes To Mental Health Treatment and the Black Community

Black people are one of the least likely groups of Americans to get professional mental health services but remain some of the most resilient people in the world. I’ve been trying to figure out how it happens my entire life. Generations of oppression, racism, poverty and community violence should have wiped our community out centuries ago. Yet here we are alive and well in 2018, just to realize that the hate and injustice toward our community is still as strong as ever. The stereotypes of…

We Show Love Around Hair: Grand Rapids Area Natural Hair Meet-Ups & Related Events

Hair in GR, we show made love for our curlfriends. A few Sundays ago, I had the pleasure of having brunch with an incredible group of ladies. It was a brunch held by the Women of Color Creatives (WOC Creatives). It was hosted by aestheticism and make-up artist, Janiece Hughuley, the owner Studio 824 Beauty Lounge. We weren’t meeting about a hair-related issue but I could help but to crush on everybody’s hair. I love when Sistah Queens get together to encourage one another and…

Product Review: Colossal Big Shot Mascara by Maybelline

.Maybe I’m beautiful. Maybe it’s Maybelline. That’s been me the last week. I got a complementary new Colossal Big Shot Mascara the company is promoting, along with their Master Precise Curvy Liquid Eye Liner. I was actually excited to receive it. That’s a surprise because I didn’t wear makeup for most of my life. Maybe a little eyeliner here and there in my late teenager years and early 20’s but nothing serious. I didn’t get interested in makeup until I turned 33. I really only…

Natural Hair Product Review: true by made beautiful

My stash was running low and I waited all of last week to get some new products. I wanted to try an entire line but I couldn’t decide which one. I wanted something I hadn’t tried before, maybe something that worked well for some of my Curl Friends on Instagram or in Facebook groups. I went to two Targets, a Walmart, a Meijer and two Sally Beauty Supply store before I finally set my eyes on “true by made beautiful”. I liked the label. The sea…

Natural Hair Lovers: Don’t Buy the Lye; Live the T.R.U.T.H.

HOW TO STAY NATURAL WHEN TIMES GET HARD I keep saying the natural life ain’t for everybody. After the  2016 Olympics, I’m starting to think the black hair life ain’t for everybody. The permed life ain’t for everybody either. I can’t believe how Gabby Douglas and Simone Biles were dogged out because their permed tresses didn’t meet black twitter’s approval. Gabby was disrespected to the point of tears, provoking her mother to respond publicly. She has been traumatized by this experience and I can relate…

My hair regimen

It has literally taken five years for me to figure out how to make my curls pop and retain moisture. The hardest part is figuring out what products my hair likes and what it doesn’t. First, I tried to figure out my hair type. I’m a 4b,  4c but what does that mean? It wasn’t helpful. Next I read about the LOC method. Liquid, oil, and creamy usually left me with creamy flakes. My hair doesn’t like to be styled with creams. I can moisturize…
