Natural Hair Tip: Want Juicy Curls? Just Add Water. 💦

My husband and were standing in line next to two women at a local chicken joint last week. One of the women enthusiastically complimented my fro-hawk. The other looked at my curls real hard and ask what I do to make it curl like that. I felt my lungs fill up with frustration and sadness. I was offended because I don’t think this sistah would’ve asked me that if my skin was lighter. People seem to believe that dark-skinned women (and men) can’t have “good” hair. My hair is supposed to be nappy, woolly, kinky or whatever, right? Wrong! But…

Natural Hair Lovers: Don’t Buy the Lye; Live the T.R.U.T.H.

HOW TO STAY NATURAL WHEN TIMES GET HARD I keep saying the natural life ain’t for everybody. After the  2016 Olympics, I’m starting to think the black hair life ain’t for everybody. The permed life ain’t for everybody either. I can’t believe how Gabby Douglas and Simone Biles were dogged out because their permed tresses didn’t meet black twitter’s approval. Gabby was disrespected to the point of tears, provoking her mother to respond publicly. She has been traumatized by this experience and I can relate to it so much. It was that type of teasing and taunting (it’s called bullying…

Training Your Natural Curls: What I wish I knew in the begining

Yesterday three different people ask me for hair tips. I love it! I’m really glad to help other people find joy in themselves. People who ask about my hair usually want to know one or two things – how I make my curls pop and how I retain moisture. I’ve shared my routine in the past (Click here for a refresher). Today, I’m going to give you an updated version to save you time and money.First and foremost, if you are thinking about embracing the natural life, jump in completely. Don’t transition. I repeat DON’T TRANSITION. It’s too much work to blend…

LoveLEE Expressions About Black Lives Matter

Yes, there is a race war but it’s against the institutions that continue to oppress us. The majority of the black people posting that Black Lives Matter have never been to a ralley and have bo affiliation with the group. We just want all people to help us restructure our system so people don’t feel a need to protest it. We have published statics outlining the disparities for decades. The civil rights movement of the 60’s educated white people about our plight but you have been in contemplation about actually changing the ststem ever since. You sympathize with us but…

Curl Friend Feature – Mrs. Sirmara Pierce, BSN, RN

Women’s health is of utmost importance especially in the black community. There are so many health disparities that black women have to deal with that ot shohld be comsidered a state of emergency. That’s why I’m proud of my Curl Friend Sirmara Pierce for organizing a community health fair in my hometown, Battle Creek MI. I was a very nice event, one of the nices health fairs I’ve ever attended. Sirmara and I went to school together from kindergarten through high school. She was always very intelligent, ambitious and compassionate. She obviously became a nurse because she likes to comfort…

Naturally Proud & Free… Forever

Why do people wanna terrorize people into doing what they feel is right. I can’t love who I want because you say it’s wrong? I’m supposed to suffer  for eternity because I won’t submit? Not only do I have to love who you say, I have to worship who, where, when and how you say? Plus, I’m supposed to live a lifetime of ignorance because you believe women shouldn’t be educated. Matter of fact, I’m supposed to shut the $<"( up because you value your words more than mine? You wanna kill me because you dislike my freedom. You wanna…

1-2-3 Slay: Natural Hair GR Photo Shoot

It was the corner of Fulton and Division in downtown Grand Rapids. I was amongst a group of twenty beautiful black sistahs, all of varying heights, sizes, shapes, complexions, hair styles and levels of swagg. We slowly strolled down the street, each with our heads high as if we balanced invisible crowns on our heads. There were bright smiles, a ton of laughter and feelings of awe as each sistah took in the beauty of the next. There was no petty snarls, side eye or unhealthy competition; just love, respect and understanding of the natural hair struggle. This created an…
