Confessions of a Natural Hair Enthusiast

What are your reasons for going natural? I wear my hair natural for several reasons. The biggest being that I want to “be true to myself”. We all say that but what does it really mean? It means completely embracing who I am in every way possible. I don’t have to live up to societies standards of beauty when I can embrace myself. I can’t do that if I’m chemically changing the molecular structure of any part of my body, including my hair with a…

Product Review: Grindlife Apparel

Family Over Everything (F.O.E.) Since I’m paying homage to a black-owned business each week of the year, naturally I have to show some love to my own family. I patroned Grindlife Apparel the second week of 2017. Grindlife is a hip and contemporary clothingline that was founded by my baby cousin, K Monay, in 2012. Currently based in ATL, she started her company while still living in our hometown of Battle Creek, Michigan. She offers a sporty array of urban gear for both men and…

2017 Product Review: Kerry Kosmetics

I decided this year that I want to purchase one product each week from a black-owned business. This is an important endeavor for me because I believe that BOBs are an important pillar in the black community. In a times such as these when retail stores like Macy’s, Sear’s, and K-Mart are fleeing low-income urban areas, it’s critical that we invest in the small businesses around us in order to survive. In fact, I believe that through the creativity and ingenuity of black entrepreneurship, we can ensure that…

New Natural Hair Products For My Kinky Hair

I’ve been going through some old pictures that highlight my hairstory. It truly has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I’m so proud that I have almost mastered the necessary techniques for styling and maintaining my hair. I can tame it or unleash the beast. Regardless I’m a product junkie who is always looking for new products to try. I always have been and probably always will be  My most recent adventure has been with Camille Rose Naturals haircare products. I…

Product Review: Colossal Big Shot Mascara by Maybelline

.Maybe I’m beautiful. Maybe it’s Maybelline. That’s been me the last week. I got a complementary new Colossal Big Shot Mascara the company is promoting, along with their Master Precise Curvy Liquid Eye Liner. I was actually excited to receive it. That’s a surprise because I didn’t wear makeup for most of my life. Maybe a little eyeliner here and there in my late teenager years and early 20’s but nothing serious. I didn’t get interested in makeup until I turned 33. I really only…

Natural Hair Product Review: true by made beautiful

My stash was running low and I waited all of last week to get some new products. I wanted to try an entire line but I couldn’t decide which one. I wanted something I hadn’t tried before, maybe something that worked well for some of my Curl Friends on Instagram or in Facebook groups. I went to two Targets, a Walmart, a Meijer and two Sally Beauty Supply store before I finally set my eyes on “true by made beautiful”. I liked the label. The sea…

Training Your Natural Curls: What I wish I knew in the begining

Yesterday three different people ask me for hair tips. I love it! I’m really glad to help other people find joy in themselves. People who ask about my hair usually want to know one or two things – how I make my curls pop and how I retain moisture. I’ve shared my routine in the past (Click here for a refresher). Today, I’m going to give you an updated version to save you time and money.First and foremost, if you are thinking about embracing the natural life,…

Natural Hair Product Review: New Styler

I tried a new styler yesterday and I must say I’m happy with the results. As I Am Curly Jelly works well. I used what I had on my stash to co-wash (Shea Moisture Professionals Cocoa Shea Co-Wash) and condition (Tresemme Botanique to rinse out, Design Essentials Natural Almond & Avocado Leave-In) my hair. I added the Curling Jelly while in the shower. I dipped my head under the water real quick then shake the excess water out. That’s funny but be careful if you…

My hair regimen

It has literally taken five years for me to figure out how to make my curls pop and retain moisture. The hardest part is figuring out what products my hair likes and what it doesn’t. First, I tried to figure out my hair type. I’m a 4b,  4c but what does that mean? It wasn’t helpful. Next I read about the LOC method. Liquid, oil, and creamy usually left me with creamy flakes. My hair doesn’t like to be styled with creams. I can moisturize…
